KLM to return flights from London City Airport

KLM is to start flying again from London City Airport from 6th February 2017 with direct daily flights to Amsterdam Schipol airport. The schedule will increase to four times a day on weekdays, daily on Saturdays and twice daily on Sundays from 28th March 2017. These flights will operate by KLM CityHooper.

Cathay Pacific opens new first and business class lounges at London Heathrow

Cathay Pacific has opened its new first and business class lounge at LHR Terminal 3 from Wednesday 7th December 2016.  The lounges feature floor to ceiling windows and views of the airports northerly runway. These new lounges follow recent lounge refurbishments by Cathay Pacific across the global including Hong Kong, Tokyo Haneda, Bangkok, Manila and Vancouver.

Qantas to fly non-stop London to Australia flights

Qantas is planning to launch a non-stop service from London to Perth from March 2018 using a 787-9 Dreamliner for the 17 hours flight.  It will be the first regular passenger route linking Australia with Europe.

British Airways opens new lounges at London Gatwick

British Airways is opening new lounges in the South Terminal at London Gatwick.  Their North Terminal lounges have already closed owing to construction work.  BA has confirmed some initial information for both check-in and lounge facilities as follows –

For check-in and security:

– There will be dedicated premium check- in area in Zone A of the Terminal for Club Europe, Club World, First Class and Silver & Gold Executive Cardholders.  This will feature dedicated seating, power outlets and bespoke furnishing.

– There will be a dedicated premium security facility on Level 3 of the South terminal.

For lounges:

– Capacity for 477 passengers (which BA say is 40% larger than the former North terminal lounge)

– A separate First Class lounge with upgraded seating, finishes and lighting

– Floor to ceiling windows with views of the runway

– A “beautifully curved” staircase overlooking the main lounge

– Full kitchen facilities in both lounges giving an upgraded food & beverage offering (details of menus are to confirmed)

– A ‘kidszone’ room for children

– Shower facilities

Virgin Atlantic launches new US routes

Virgin Atlantic is planning to launch flights from Manchester to Boston and San Francisco in the spring 2017 with Boston initially operating twice weekly (Wednesdays & Saturdays) and San Francisco operating thrice weekly (Tuesdays, Fridays, & Sundays).  Virgin Atlantic has long had a presence in Manchester flying to Orlando, Barbados, Las Vegas and Atlanta with the latter being the hub of its transatlantic partner and minority shareholder, Delta Airlines.

Premium Economy Delta Air Lines

Delta Air Lines is to offer a premium economy product when it takes delivery of its first A350 aircraft in the spring 2017.  The new cabin will then be rolled out onto its fleet of B777 and A330-200s and B767-400s.

Lufthansa’s luggage service

Passengers using Lufthansa can now use a link on their mobile boarding pass within the Lufthansa app to track where their luggage is currently located.  Arriving at their destination airport passengers can check their app to see the exact time of the delivery of their luggage and on which baggage carousel.   This new service will initially be available in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Milan and gradually rolled out to other airports.   In addition Lufthansa is testing home printed baggage tags for their flights within the EU which allows the passenger to go to the airport bag-drop desks so by-passing the check-in desks.

British Airways to fly to New Orleans
From 27th March 2017 BA will offer a direct service between Heathrow and New Orleans (known as ‘The Big Easy’) four times weekly using a B787-9 Dreamliner. The new service will depart London at 15:40 arriving New Orleans at 19:40. The flight from New Orleans will depart at 21:10 arriving in London at 12:00 noon the next day. There will be a total of 214 seats across three classes – 154 seats in World Traveller (economy), 25 seats in World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and 35 seats in Club World (business).

Emirates unveils costly new Business Class lounge

Emirates have announced the opening of its new Business Class lounge at Dubai International Airport following a two year and $11m makeover. The new look now includes three concept areas, a health hub, a Moët & Chandon champagne lounge and a food and drink section. The newly-refurbished lounge measures nearly 10,000sq ft and can accommodate more than 1,500 people, a 40% increase in seating capacity. Lounge guests can also refresh with a shower, unwind at designated “quiet areas”, stay up to date with the latest news and live sports and stay connected with free Wi-Fi.

Iberia is to introduce Premium Economy

Iberia has unveiled a new premium Economy cabin on selected long-haul flights from Madrid from summer 2017. Known as Turista Premium in Spanish it will feature dedicated seats in a 2-3-2 configuration with a seat pitch of 37 inches and width of 19 inches. The first destinations are expected to be Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Lima or Chicago.

Emirates flies A380’s to New Zealand


Emirates is now flying A380s on a further two routes to New Zealand operating on both its non-stop Auckland flight as well as its route to Christchurch, which includes a stop in Sydney. The introduction of the aircraft means British passengers can now fly the entire journey to New Zealand on an A380 with Emirates with a stopover in Dubai.

British Airways to fly to Fort Lauderdale next summer

BA will fly from London Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale from 6th July 2017 and will be their fourth destination in Florida after Miami, Tampa and Orlando. The service will operate using a B777-200 aircraft four times per week in the summer and three times weekly in the winter.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 banned
In the wake of Samsung’s global recall of the Galaxy Note 7 airlines from around the world are banning the device over its fire risks. Following a US ban, airlines based in Hong Kong, China, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Germany and Italy are prohibiting passengers flying with troubled smart phone.

British Airways suspends its Chengdu flights
British Airways is suspending its London Heathrow to Chengdu flights from 12th January 2017 owing to its poor load factors. China is an important market for BA and they will continue to operate flights to Beijing and Shanghai on mainland China. In addition BA recently announced a code-share arrangement with China Eastern Airlines and is now offering connections to Kunming, Xi’an, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Chongqing from Shanghai.

Long-haul check in time at Heathrow for BA has changed
British Airways has amended the time required for its passengers to check-in for its long haul flights. From 30th October 2016 check-in from London Heathrow will close 60 minutes before flight departure; short haul check remains unchanged at 45 minutes.

British Airways teams up with M & S

M & S will supply the food to BA’s economy class passengers on short haul flights from Heathrow and Gatwick starting from the 11 January 2017. London City and London Stansted are planned to be included by the summer 2017. All food and drink will be chargeable with the menus changing seasonally (each quarter). For those travelling in Club Europe business class it will remain complimentary. And payment will only by debit, credit or Avios card, no cash will be accepted.

Aeroflot to start Gatwick to Moscow flights

In November Aeroflot will be starting a new daily Gatwick to Moscow (Sheremetyevo) flight using an Airbus A320 aircraft. The flight times are as follows –
Gatwick – Moscow 1610 – 2250
Moscow – Gatwick 1315 – 1430
Aeroflot already operates flights from Heathrow to Moscow Sheremetyevo, while British Airways flies from Heathrow to Moscow’s Domodedovo.

Lufthansa and Air China to offer code-sharing flights

Lufthansa and Air China are to coordinate flights and schedules between Europe and China starting in the summer 2017 providing a greater choice of routes, departure points and connections. Both carriers are members of Star Alliance.

Singapore Airlines introducing Jakarta-Sydney flights

Singapore Airlines is giving travellers even more choice by expanding its capacity to Australia and Indonesia. Starting 23 November 2016 SQ will have a new Singapore- Jakarta-Sydney flight served three times per week (Monday, Wednesday & Friday).
Flights will depart Singapore at 20:15 and arrive in Jakarta at 21:00. Onward flights from Jakarta will depart at 22:25 and arrive in Sydney at 09:30 the next day. Return flights from Sydney will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. They will depart Sydney at 11:00 and arrive in Jakarta at 14:35. Flights will then depart Jakarta at 15:35 and arrive in Singapore at 18:10. (All times stated are local).

British Airways free upgrade to First Class

British Airways is offering a free upgrade to First Class for anyone who books a return Club World ticket. The offer is open until 11th December 2016 with travel to be completed by 23rd December outbound and 30th December 2016 inbound back to the UK. This upgrade is also available on American Airlines operated flights to the US if booked with a BA code share flight number.

Singapore Airlines & its London route

Singapore Airlines is to increase its capacity on its London Heathrow to Singapore route with a third daily A380 flight from 24th October onwards as part of its winter schedule. The fourth flight will use a B777-300. Singapore Airlines was the launch customer for the A380 and the first operator to use this type of aircraft on scheduled flights to Europe when it introduced it on its Singapore – London flights in March 2008.

The visa waiver for UK passport holders entering Vietnam is being extended by a year until 30 June 2017. First introduced in July last year it allows single-entry stays of up to 15 days.

British Airways cuts second meal option & other items

British Airways is removing the second meal service for both Premium and Economy (World Traveller) Class passengers on flights of seven hours or less for Premium and eight and a half hours or less for Economy. In addition bottle water will no longer be offered to World Traveller passengers to be replaced by cups of water. And for First Class passengers the pre-meal snack is being removed and blankets will no longer be placed on their seats although they will still be offered.

Virgin Atlantic & Delta Air Lines consolidate from same Heathrow Terminal

Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines have started to operate from Terminal 3 from September as part of their joint venture so by making it easier for their customers to connect between each airline and having their services operate under one roof.

United Airlines introduced new business class

United Airlines is to introduce an all new business class called ‘Polaris’ on its long-haul aircraft. The new seats offer a full flat bed, forward facing with all seats having direct access to the aisle.  Other features include 16 inch HD TV, one-touch lumbar support, new amenity kits and improved dining. The new business class seats will be introduced in December on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and subsequently on Boeing 787-10 and Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. And on the ground United will open new business class lounges in nine airports around the world with features including showers, hot meals served in a restaurant setting and private daybeds.

Tianjin Airlines arrives in UK

Tianjin Airlines starts a twice-weekly service between Gatwick and Chongqing on 25th June signally yet another Chinese airline to arrive in the UK. Flight time is 11.5 hours flown by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft with 18 Business Class and 242 Economy seats. Chongqing is in the centre of China with a population of 8.5 million, considered the economic centre of the upstream Yangtze basin it is also a major transport hub and manufacturing centre.  Tianjin Airlines has more than 90 aircraft and is a subsidiary of the privately owned Hainan Airlines which is China’s fourth largest carrier.

New visa & passport rules for visitors to USA

UK biometric passport for USA visa waiver

From 1st April 2016 British visitors to the US must hold a biometric passport (e-passport) in order to use the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation scheme (ESTA).  Biometric passports are identifiable on British passports by the camera logo at the bottom of the front cover and have an embedded electronic chip holding the carrier’s facial details.

For those British passport holders who do not have an e-passport then they will have to renew their passport in order to receive one with a chip in it, cost £72.50.  Alternatively they can apply for a tourism visa from the US Embassy with the cost being around £115.

Vietnam Airlines daily to Vietnam from Heathrow

Vietnam Airlines will have a daily flight between Heathrow Terminal 4 and Vietnam from 20th June 2016.  Both Hanoi, the capital and Ho Chi Minh City, commonly known as Saigon will be served with the Hanoi flight departing on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and Ho Chi Minh City departing Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.  All flights will operate a 787 aircraft with a 3 class service.

British Airways rolls-out Wi-fi update

BA will start to roll out in-flight Wi-fi in early 2017 following an agreement with Gogo 2ku with the aim to install on most of its long-haul flights by 2019. Wi-fi will be fitted on all Boeing 777, Boeing 787 and Airbus A380 aircraft.  BA’s parent company International Airlines Group has also announced the same Wi-fi system will be added to Aer Lingus’ Boeing 757 fleet and Iberia’s A340 fleet.  Both Aer Lingus and Iberia offer Wi-fi on their Airbus A330 aircraft.

Malaysia Airlines is redesigning its lounges

Malaysia Airlines is to extensively redesign its Golden Lounges at London Heathrow and Kuala Lumpur International which will combine modern functionality with Malaysian styles.  New features planned include a demonstration kitchen allowing passengers to interact with chiefs and a ‘snack on the go’.  Also the new design will feature an expansive lounge with enhanced amenities including upgrading of the Wi-fi offering.

British Airways offers pre-paid meal in advance

Anyone flying BA long-haul (select destinations) can now order their meal in advance as an alternative to the complimentary in-flight meal.  If you are flying in World Traveller (economy) departing Heathrow there is a wide choice of meals offered between 30 days and 24 hours prior to your flight departure.  Meals to choose from include Gourmet dining, Taste of Britain, Great British Breakfast, Healthy Choice, Taste of the Far East and Vegetarian Kitchen with prices ranging from £15 to £18.  Drinks are included at no extra cost.

Malaysia Airlines Offers First and Business Class Companion Fares

Malaysia Airlines is offering First and Business Class companion fares until 15th April 2016 for immediate travel to 30th November 2016. Two passengers travelling together can experience the ultimate in comfort and style on Malaysia Airlines’ flights to Malaysia, Southeast Asia and Australia. In addition the baggage allowance is 50kg of checked baggage each for First Class and 40kg each for Business Class together with access to Malaysia Airlines’ Golden Lounge.

A recent survey by Savills has ranked cities across the world based on how global they actually are in terms of their economic performance, importance of the real estate, power and connectivity.  London came out top followed by New York City, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore.

British Airways upgrades to first class

British Airways is offering free upgrades to First Class one-way for its passengers travelling in Club World (Business Class) on flights between 5th April until 28th August 2016.  This offer is open to UK customers on selected departures booked before 14th June with outbound journeys made by 28th August and return by 8th September.

British Airways reduces baggage allowance for Business Class passengers

British Airways is reducing the baggage allowance for their business class passengers from three to two bags from 10th May 2016 with each weighing a maximum of 32kg.  However their Gold Executive Club Members will still be entitled to an additional free bag.  This new policy is bringing the baggage allowance in line with its One World partners American Airline and Finnair.

Hainan Airlines starts UK flights

Hainan Airlines, China’s fourth-largest airline is to launch on 10th June 2016 a new direct service from Manchester to Beijing.   Operating 4 days weekly (outbound & inbound Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday) and using a wide bodied Airbus A330-300 it will offer a business and economy service. It will also be the only carrier offering a non-stop flight between Manchester and China.

Air Canada and wi-fi

Air Canada is joining a growing band of airlines to offer wi-fi for its passengers.  It has announced it will offer connectivity on its international flights allowing its customers to email, stream entertainment and surf the internet while flying.  It will begin installing the technology on its wide-body fleet from this autumn.

Malaysia Airlines reveals its new Airbus A330 business class seat

Malaysia Airlines’ new business class seat on its A330 was launched last week debuting on Wednesday 23 March on flight MH141 Kuala Lumpur to Sydney.  It aims to have introduced this new seat to all its international A330-300s by early autumn.

The features include fully-flat, extending to a 193cm bed, 1-2-1 & 1-2-2 alternative pairing configuration, 16-inch HD in-flight screen and AC power outlet with USB slot.

Emirates extends online check-in

Emirates are extending its online check-in to 48 hours before departure which allows its customers to check-in online either with a mobile device or desktop from 48 hours to 90 minutes before departure.  But for its flights to and from the USA, online check-in is available 48 hours before departure; boarding passes will only be issued 24 hours in advance.

Virgin Atlantic launches new US routes & new code-sharing with Flybe

Also Virgin is entering a new code share agreement with Flybe.  This code share agreement with Flybe means from 2nd April customers will be able to book tickets on Virgin Atlantic’s website to travel from one of 18 UK or European airports and connect to a Virgin flight at Manchester, Glasgow or London Gatwick Airport.

This announcement could signal the development of a small but growing hub for Virgin Atlantic at Manchester.

British Airways multiple boarding passes

If you are planning to board a BA flight then this has just got easier thanks to the introduction of multiple mobile boarding passes.  Now up to eight individual mobile boarding passes can be viewed on one smart phone provided everyone is travelling together and on the same booking reference number.

This update is the latest in a series of recent improvements made to the airline’s popular travel app. Multiple boarding passes are available from the following departure airports:  Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Basel, Belfast, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Geneva, Glasgow, Jersey, Leeds, London City, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Manchester, Vienna, Zurich. They will be available from more airports over the coming weeks. Bookings which include an infant passenger cannot currently use multiple boarding passes.

British Airways is to start flying to Berlin’s Tegel Airport from London City and Stansted airports from 19th June 2016.  The flights from Stansted will operate once a week for the summer season only and those from City Airport will be up to 3 daily flights all year round.

Garuda Indonesia Companion Fare

To celebrate Garuda Indonesia new non-stop flight from Heathrow to Jakarta starting at the end of March they have introduced a special business class companion fare. This fare needs to be booked by the 30th April for travel 31st March to 30th June 2016 with 2 passengers travelling together. Garuda’s business class features full flat seats, 1-2-1 configuration, 15inch LCD touch-screen TV, in-flight WiFi and gourmet food on their B777-300ER aircraft.

British Airways and Unaccompanied Minors

British Airways is to stop its unaccompanied minor (children under 12 year old travelling alone) service as part of a cost cutting exercise.  Existing tickets will be honoured however no new bookings will be accepted.  So any child under 12 must be accompanied by an adult aged 16 or over.

Britain’s largest airports

London Heathrow remains the UK’s busiest airport according to the CAA. In 2015 it handled nearly 75m passengers.  Gatwick is the second busiest with 40m followed by Manchester 23m although London City Airport saw the biggest percentage change versus 2014 at 18.4%.

All Nippon Airways celebrating 30 year anniversary

ANA is celebrating 30 years of international services on 3rd March 2016; it was on 3rd March 1986 when they inaugurated a flight from Tokyo to Guam. London followed two years later on 22nd June 1989 with their Tokyo Narita – Gatwick service. It was not long after that date before they switched to London Heathrow.  Today they fly to 59 routes and 39 cities worldwide.

Korean Air increasing capacity from London

Korean Air is introducing the Airbus A380 on its daily London to Seoul service from 27th March 2016.  The super jumbo as it is affectionately known will offer 407 seats replacing the B777 on the route.

Philippines Airlines flying daily

Philippines Airlines is to offer a daily London to Manila service from 28th June 2016 with flight PR721 departing London Heathrow at 1050 arriving Manila at 1950 the next day. The return flight PR720 leaves the Philippines at 1320 arriving London 2100. It re-launched its direct services from London in 2013.

British Airways to fly to Tehran

British Airways is to resume its flights to Iran this summer starting on 14th July 2016 with direct flights from London Heathrow to Tehran.  It is planned to operate a six per week service before moving to daily from the winter 2016 operation a B777 with four classes.  Tehran is one of 14 new routes British Airways will be launching this year including San Jose, Costa Rica, San Jose, California and Lima in Peru.

Top City Destinations

Euromonitor has released the Top 100 City destinations for 2014 international arrivals and it shows once again Hong Kong is the top destination in the world with 27.8 million international visitors followed by London (17.3m) and Singapore (17.0m).  Rio de Janeiro registered the strongest increase of international arrivals with a 46.6% increase.  London remains the top European city destination followed by Paris.  And Asia remains the dominant region for city travel making up over one third of the top 100.

Singapore introducing fingerprinting on arrival

Singapore will introduce compulsive scanning of fingerprinting to all visitors from June 2016 aimed at tightening security.  It is planned to include all air passengers, ferry traffic from Indonesia, cruise passengers and causeway commuters between Singapore and Malaysia.

Garuda Indonesia to go non-stop from Heathrow to Jakarta

Garuda Indonesia is to start a non-stop flight from the UK to Indonesia at the end of March 2016.  Currently it flies to Jakarta from Gatwick via Amsterdam but will switch to London Heathrow offering five flights per week using a B777-300ER aircraft.

Canada – entry rules changing

Canada is introducing from 15th March 2016 a new entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air which will allow Canada to screen travellers before they arrive.  Known as an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA), eligible travellers including all British citizens will need to apply online for an eTA before travel.  The cost of the eTA is C$7 per passenger and the validity of the eTA is five years, or until the passengers passport expires.

Airlines for Europe (A4E) is a new Association which has been created and formed by Europe’s leading five airline groups – Air France/KLM, easyJet, International Airlines Group, Lufthansa Group and Ryanair to represent the interests of its members when dealing with the EU institutions, international organisations and national governments on European aviation issues. Iberia returning to Tokyo

Iberia is returning to Japan this winter with the introduction of a three times weekly flight from Madrid to Tokyo Narita from Tuesday 18 October 2016.

In addition it is hoping to introduce flights from Madrid to Shanghai later this year subject to Government approval.  The Tokyo and Shanghai flights will be Iberia’s only Asian routes and they will be operated using an Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

British Airways and Iberia joint business with LAN and TAM Airlines

A new joint business with LAN and TAM Airlines on flights between Europe and South America has been announced by BA and Iberia.

The launch of the joint business will be subject to regulatory approval which, if granted, will allow the four airlines to co-ordinate routes, schedules, pricing and marketing of flights between Europe and South America.

Passengers will also benefit from reciprocal recognition of frequent flyer benefits (this already happens to a degree as all airlines are members of the Oneworld alliance) and easier access to code-share flights on the airlines’ respective local and regional networks.

The joint business is likely to operate on a similar basis as the current joint-venture between British Airways, Iberia and American Airlines on flights between Europe & North America.

Aeromexico adds more London Heathrow flights

Aeromexico is planning to add a sixth flight from London Heathrow to Mexico City starting in June 2016 for a three month period owing to high summer demand.

The route will operate using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and will depart London on a Sunday 3.55pm arriving Mexico City 9.35pm same day and departing Mexico City 8.50pm arriving London 1.30pm next day.

The service between these two capital cities allows customers travelling from London Heathrow to connect to a wide network of destinations in Mexico including Cancun, Cozumel, Guadalajara, Los Cabos, Merida, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, Queretaro, Veracruz, and Villahermosa, plus more than 30 international destinations such as Bogota, Buenos Aires, Havana, Santo Domingo, and Sao Paulo in South America and the Caribbean, and Los Angeles, New York, and Vancouver in North America.

British Airways changing its Executive Club Programme

From 28th April 2016, BA is changing its Executive Club programme and the rewards (Avios and tier points) passengers get when flying.

The rate members earn Avios points will now depend more on the amount paid for the ticket including the class booked and type of fare booked.  So a more flexible and higher priced ticket will earn more Avios.  The cheapest ticket in Euro Traveller and World Traveller will earn only a minimum of 25 per cent miles flown instead of 100 per cent.  Silver members’ tier bonus will change from 100 per cent to 50 per cent. Gold members’ tier bonus will remain at 100 per cent and Bronze members will stay at 25 per cent.

British Airways reducing size of carry-on baggage

British Airways is reducing the size of carry-on baggage permitted on board its flights from 18th August 2016. The size of each passenger’s personal handbag/laptop bag can be no larger than 40 x 30 x 15cm so that it can be stowed beneath the seat in front. The current maximum size allowed is 45 x 36 x 20cm. BA will still allow passengers to take two pieces of hand luggage into the cabin with the size of the second, main cabin bag remaining unchanged at 56 x 45 x 25cm.

Also on the 18th August, the carrier is changing the way in which passengers board their flight, with the order determined by cabin and Executive Club status. World Traveller passengers will then be asked to board by seat row number.

New baggage delivery service at London Heathrow

AirPortr is the new same-day baggage delivery service which has just started at Heathrow offering luggage transfers to and from Heathrow as well as from your London home, hotel or office. Currently offered at Terminal 3 and 5 it aims to rollout to Terminals 2 and 4 during 2016.  This service can be pre-booked in advance or on the day of travel online on any device.  For those arriving at Heathrow bags can be dropped off at the AirPortr desk in the Arrivals hall and then delivered same day.  Alternatively bags are collected from any London location and delivered to the airport (Departures hall) at a convenient time for the passenger. Two bags for example delivered between the airport and Central London costs £30.

British Airways adds 3D surround sound

British Airways is introducing a new 3D surround sound for its in-flight on long-haul flights across all its cabins regardless of class of travel providing a new dimension to watching films on board.  It is available for passengers using their own headphones or a pair provided by BA.  This 3D audio is possible because it takes the original 5.1 surround sound mix and creates a stereo encode which is then used on any in-flight entertainment system.

Delta Air Lines and KLM launch code-share agreement with Jet Airways

Delta and KLM will start from 27 March 2016, subject to government approval, a code-sharing agreement with Jet Airways so allowing any customer flying from Europe and the USA to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport the ability to connect onto a Jet Airways daily flight to New Delhi and Mumbai.  This new agreement provides customers with a co-ordinated customer service, a single ticket and through check-in of bags to their final destination.

In addition, Jet Airways will place its code on flights between Amsterdam and 11 destinations in the United States and Canada operated by Delta and KLM. These include: New York-JFK, Newark, Chicago, Washington D.C., Houston, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal and Edmonton. Jet Airways will also code-share on KLM-operated flights to 30 European destinations beyond Amsterdam including Madrid, Zurich and Milan. KLM’s service between Amsterdam and New Delhi also forms part of this agreement.

Cathay Pacific launching new service to Hong Kong from London Gatwick

Cathay Pacific is planning to operate a four-times-weekly flight from London Gatwick to Hong Kong starting 2 September 2016 making it the only airline to offer a non-stop between these two airports.  Cathay Pacific will operate from Gatwick’s South Terminal with a new Airbus 350-900 aircraft.  This will mean Cathay Pacific offering a total of 39 flights a week between London and Hong Kong given they currently offer a five-times-daily service from London  Heathrow. Cathay Pacific also provides four-times-weekly service between Manchester and Hong Kong.

American Airlines is finally entering the Premium Economy market and will introduce a dedicated cabin on select long-haul flights from late 2016 onwards initially on its Boeing 787-900 Dreamliners.  Details of the actual product and exact routes have yet to be confirmed.

Malaysia Airlines route restructure & new partnership with Emirates

Malaysia Airlines has announced it is to retain its London Heathrow route as the only European destination it will serve.  Its flights from Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris Charles de Gaulle will cease by the end of January.

Malaysia Airlines has also agreed a new code-sharing partnership with Emirates which means they will rely on Emirates for its European network coverage via Dubai offering 38 destinations in the UK, mainland Europe and Scandinavia.

Gatwick rail route to allow Oyster payments

Anyone who travels by rail between London and Gatwick Airport will be able to pay for their journey with their Oyster card from January 2016 offering more convenience and flexibility for commuters.  Using either Southern or Thameslink services from central London to Gatwick the cost will be £14 in peak times or £8 for off-peak (current peak single fare is £15.40).  And for those wishing to use the Gatwick Express with their Oyster Card the cost will be £19.80 compared with the current fare of £19.90.

Singapore Airlines offers Dusseldorf flights

Singapore Airlines is to launch a nonstop A350-900 flight from Dusseldorf in July 2016.  The three-times per week flight will operate on Mondays/Tuesdays, Thursdays/Fridays and Saturdays/Sundays.  This new service means Singapore Airlines serving three airports in Germany including Frankfurt and Munich.

British Airways & wifi

BA is planning to offer its customers wifi across its fleet with the aim to have 90 per cent of its long-haul aircraft fitted by early 2019 and its first short-haul by 2017. BA trialled wifi on a B747-400 aircraft over a 12-month period in 2014/15 using a Panasonic solution and continues to offer it on its New York service.

British Airways step closer to Aer Lingus

BA and Aer Lingus who belong to the International Airlines Group have taken steps for closer collaboration around code sharing on certain routes.

Aer Lingus routes between London Heathrow and Dublin, Shannon and Cork and London Gatwick and Dublin, Belfast City and Cork can now be booked when travelling direct between the UK and Ireland from Wednesday 11 November 2015.

In addition, Aer Lingus routes between London Gatwick and Knock and London Heathrow and Belfast City can also be booked as code shares.  BA is also applying its flight codes to Aer Lingus flights from UK regional airports, with Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool being the first added.

British Airways back serving the Scottish Highlands (Inverness)

BA is to start a daily service from Heathrow Terminal 5 to Inverness on 3 May 2016.  BA had previously operated flights from November 1968 until November 1997 but suspended them owing to commercial reasons.

Qatar Airways new Birmingham Service

Qatar Airways is to launch a new direct flight from Birmingham Airport to Doha from 30th March 2016 offering eight flights per week using the state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This new service will bring Qatar’s UK departure points to four – London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham and connect Birmingham to over 150 destinations on the Qatar network.

Premium passport control at Gatwick

London Gatwick has launched a new fast-track passport control service in conjunction with UK Borders which is available to anyone arriving and who is prepared to pay the allotted fee.  Priced at £12.50pp and aimed to minimise the waiting time, it is however limited to 50 passengers per hour.  It is available to EU and non-EU passengers from 0600 until 0000 daily except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and must be booked online between 24 hours and three months in advance.

Gatwick Express to be suspended over Christmas period

The Gatwick Express which operates between London Victoria and Gatwick airport is due to be suspended for up to 10 days during the Christmas/New Year period.  Owing to engineering works the suspension will be from late Christmas Eve until Sunday 3 January.  Southern Trains will however be running trains from London Victoria to Gatwick via Horsham.

Terminal 5 – new e-passport gates

The newest generation of e-passport gates have opened at London Heathrow’s Terminal 5 with 15 gates opening allowing customers to clear the UK border quicker. Customers simply scan their e-passport at the barrier. The system runs a face recognition check against the chip in their passport and then, if they’re eligible to enter the UK, the gate will open automatically – all in a matter of seconds.

BA launches Gatwick to New York service

British Airways will launch a daily Boeing 777-200 service between Gatwick and New York (JFK) from 1st May 2016 making it the only airline to offer flights to NYC from all three of London’s main airports, Heathrow, Gatwick and London City.  BA2273 will depart daily from Gatwick at 16:40, arriving at New York’s JFK airport at 19:30. The return BA2272 will depart JFK at 22:00, arriving at Gatwick at 10:00 the next day.

Vietnam Airlines increases its Heathrow to Vietnam service

Vietnam Airlines is improving its schedule for the winter 2015-2016 including a new additional weekly non-stop to Ho Chi Minh City.  It is now operating six weekly non-stop flights to Ho Chi Minh City and is the only airline to offer direct flights between the UK and Vietnam operating a brand new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.  Departures from London Heathrow’s Terminal 4 are now 11am.  And from next summer it is planned to increase this service to daily.

Japan Airlines has been awarded the ‘best Economy Class seat’ in the world by Skytrax at the 2015 World Airlines Awards which are considered to be the global benchmark of airline excellence.  This seat provides increased pitch and a slim-style seatback design with more legroom and adjustable headrest. This award follows hot on the heels of JAL being named ‘best Business Class’ back in 2013.

BA moves flights to Terminal 3

British Airways is moving eight of its long-haul flights from London Heathrow Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 on 14th October 2015.  The flights are to Accra, Cape Town, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, Nairobi, Phoenix and Vancouver.  This move is part of BA’s consolidation into two terminals at Heathrow following the closure of Terminal 1 in June 2015 and allows better connections to many of BA’s oneworld partners who are based in Terminal 3.

London City Airport to expand

London City Airport which currently handles 4.2 million passengers a year is looking to expand with the first phase seeing the opening of the Western Pier extension offering a new pier with open-plan gate spaces some additional retail and food outlets and some 650 extra seating as well as free wi-fi all to be completed by the summer 2016.

British Airways SME loyalty scheme members – Bonus points available

British Airways is offering 50 per cent more points to members of its On Business Programme loyalty scheme for SME’s.  Over the next two months on eligible flights across the BA, American Airlines and Iberia network members can earn bonus points before 15th December 2015.  On Business is a free to join scheme with members being able to choose between immediate discounts of at least 5 per cent off selected flights or On Business points that can be used towards future flights and upgrades.

Qatar Airways to fly to Sydney

Qatar Airways will operate daily services from its Doha hub to Sydney from 1st March 2016 making this the third Australian service joining Melbourne and Perth.  The new flights will be flown by B777-300 aircraft with a schedule as follows –

Heathrow Express offers new fares

Heathrow Express has introduced a £6.99 single fare between London Paddington and Heathrow and for Business First passengers the charge is £9.99.  These are available on advance bookings made between 3-6 months ahead of travel.  These new fares follow hot on the heels of the recently announced new ticket pricing structure which offers 25% off the Express Saver and Business First fares booked up to seven days in advance.  Fares then increase up to 50% off for bookings made up to 30 days in advance and then 66% for tickets booked for between 90 days and 6-months before travel..

Singapore Airlines delays Airbus A380 premium economy rollout

Singapore Airlines has delayed the introduction of its new premium economy class on 11 of its Airbus A380 routes including those to London and Paris. This will impact on any bookings from 9th September until March 2016. The actual dates for the introduction will be confirmed in due course.

The rollout of premium economy on Singapore Airlines’ Boeing 777-300ER jets has not been affected.

Emirates offer longest non-stop flight in world

Emirates will fly the world’s longest non-stop flight from February 2016 when it launches its first Central America gateway servicing Panama City.  The B777-200LR will take 17 hours and 35 minutes to fly from Dubai to Panama City.

SAS new hand baggage fare

SAS is launching a hand baggage only fare entitled ‘SAS Go Light’ on routes within Europe from 8th September 2015.  This fare allows passengers to rebook tickets within 24 hours, select seats 22 hours before departure and receive coffee and tea on their flight.  This fare will be €14 cheaper than a SAS Go ticket and passengers can add check-in luggage for €25.  Also the ‘SAS Go Light’ fare is a supplementary low-cost offering which is in addition to the existing SAS Go (economy) and SAS Plus (premium economy) products.  The ‘SAS Go Light’ will initially be tested on routes between Scandinavia and Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain. It will not be available on routes within Scandinavia.

Germania introduces new Premium Economy class

Germania, the German based airline who fly to destinations throughout Europe, North Africa and Middle East (currently serving more than 140 destinations) are offering passengers from 1st September 2015 an all-new Premium Economy class offering on their flights to Tehran and Mashhad, Iran which include Priority Check-In, increased checked baggage allowance and more comfort and space on-board.  In the UK Germania have scheduled direct flights from Gatwick to Erfurt, Germany and Pristina, Kosova.

Easyjet’s cabin baggage policy

Easyjet is dropping its guaranteed cabin baggage policy which will result in more passengers having to have their luggage put in the hold. The airline previously allowed passengers with carry-on luggage measuring 50 x 40 x 20cm or less to keep their bags with them on board, while those who took larger bags up to the maximum size permitted – 56 x 45 x 25cm risked being asked to put their luggage in the hold. Members of Easyjet Plus which costs £170 a year and passengers paying for seats in the front of the cabin at a cost of £9.99 per person or those paying extra for flexible fares or more legroom, are exempt. These passengers may also bring a second bag measuring up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm on board.

British Airways flight update

British Airways is to introduce a new direct flight to Peru’s capital city Lima from London Gatwick beginning 4 May 2016 flying three times per week during the peak season and twice weekly in the winter. Other routes BA has started this year from Gatwick include Seville, Madeira and Cagliari with a number of further new routes earmarked to start soon including Vienna, Valencia and Sharm El Sheikh.

In addition, BA is suspending its flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan with the final service departing Heathrow on 11 October 2015 with the return departing 12 October 2015.

Malaysian food featured in new Good Food series

John Torode an Australian celebrity chef will be seen in a new 10 part series entitled ‘Malaysian Adventure’ planned to be broadcast in the UK on Good Food channel in early 2016.

The programme will follow John as he travels through Malaysia from the capital Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi Island off the northern coast.   He meets local chiefs, restaurateurs and visits night markets and explores the impact of the history and culture of Malaysia food.

Emirates offers A380 on all its London flights

Emirates will provide A380 aircraft on all eight daily flights from London when it introduces a third A380 on its London Gatwick service from January 2016. Emirates operates a total of 119 weekly flights via six UK gateways; London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle and Glasgow.

New lounge opens at Heathrow Terminal 5

The first independent airport lounge entitled ‘Aspire, the Lounge & Spa’ is to open at Terminal 5 at Gate A18. It will offer travellers a relaxing environment with runway views, British inspired menu, refreshments, beverages, shower facilities, newspapers and magazines, complimentary high speed Wi-Fi and a range of spa treatments. It is open from 5am – 11pm, 7 days per week. Travellers can enjoy a three hour pass for £35 when booked in advance at or £40 at the reception on the day subject to availability.

Qantas double daily to Tokyo

Qantas has launched a new double daily service between Australia and Japan with the introduction of a daily service from Sydney to Tokyo’s Haneda airport and between Brisbane and Narita airport.  This launch follows Jetstar’s recent introduction of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight on the Melbourne to Narita route.

KLM is introducing is new World Business Class seats on its forthcoming B787-9 aircraft later this year which will see a fully-flat bed and 16-inch in-flight entertainment screen.  In addition wifi will be available in all classes on its  B787-9 aircraft.

British Airways amends hand baggage allowances and boarding

British Airways is introducing a new boarding procedure and amendments to its hand baggage allowance to help with its punctuality.

Passengers will be invited to board aircraft in order based on cabin and their Executive Club status.  Other customers will then be asked to board by seat row number.  Those travelling with infants or who require extra assistance will still continue to board before everyone else.

And in terms of hand luggage travellers can continue to carry two pieces of hand baggage, one should be a handbag or laptop.  The sizing for this handbag or laptop should not exceed 40x30x15cm with the size of the other bag no larger than 56x45x25cm.  A new yellow tag for these hand baggage’s which are within the new dimensions will be issued.

British Airways to end Kazakhstan flight

British Airways is suspending its flights to Kazakhstan as from 11 October 2015 owing to the poor passenger loads and therefore its commercial viability is no longer justified.  BA inherited this route when it merged with bmi in 2012.  Those passengers looking for an alternative option from London can fly Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Turkish Airlines via Istanbul.

British Airways & its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

British Airways is adding routes for its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner including Kuala Lumpur, Muscat and Delhi. The latest Boeing 787-9 aircraft will be fitted with state-of-the-art British design features including a First cabin with just eight seats, compared to the usual 14 as well as Club World, World Traveller Plus and World Traveller.

BA will start its five-time weekly Delhi service from London Heathrow from 25 October 2015.  Its outbound service BA257 from Heathrow to Delhi will depart on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, while return service BA256 will leave on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Philippine Airlines add more flights to its London Manila route

Philippine Airlines will add a fifth weekly service on to its London Heathrow-Manila route later this year.  The carrier currently flies a four-times weekly service on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays but from 25 October it will restore a fifth service back to the route, which on Thursdays.

British Airways to switch terminal at Gatwick

British Airways is planning to move from its current home at North Terminal to the South Terminal in November 2016.  The move will include a new Executive Club lounge and check in area.  This is all part of an overall £2.2bn investment programme by Gatwick Airport including £120 million improvements at the railway station.

Sydney to welcome ANA Tokyo service in December

All Nippon Airways is to start a new daily direct Tokyo Haneda to Sydney flight from December 2015 using a 215 seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.  In 2014 more than 140,000 Japanese visited New South Wales so ANA’s decision to resume flying to Australia will help boost tourism between these two countries.  The new service will add 80,000 seats to Australia each year.  ANA is the largest airline in Japan with a network of 73 international and 117 domestic routes and a member of Star Alliance.

easyBus launches new service from Central London to Heathrow

easyBus has just launched a new shuttle bus service from Shepherd’s Bush to Heathrow Central Bus Station starting on 1st July.  Offering up to 90 services daily the first bus leaves Shepherd’s Bush at 3.30am and the last departing Heathrow at 1.25am with the journey time just 30 minutes. To celebrate the launch tickets will be priced at £1 until 14th July, thereafter the normal fare will start at £2.

Singapore giants link up to drive tourists

Three key players in the Singapore market have joined forces to jointly promote inbound travel to Singapore.  Singapore Airlines, Singapore Tourism Board and Changi Airport Group have come together under a two-year partnership investing some £20m to highlight the Singapore experience to the business, leisure and MICE markets in more than 15 countries worldwide.

Garuda Indonesia voted the best cabin crew in the world

Garuda Indonesia has been voted ‘the world’s best cabin crew’ by Skytrax.  This is the second consecutive year they have won this prestigious prize.  The award is based on a global customer satisfaction survey of some 18 million passengers measuring standards across key performance indicators.  Currently Garuda Indonesia ranks seventh in the list of ‘The World’s Best Airlines’.

Vietnam visa changes

Britain along with France, Germany, Spain and Italy will no longer require a visa to visit Vietnam for any stay up to 15 days in length so long as you have a return air ticket.This will come into effect for one year starting 1st July 2015 and applies to all types of passports. There is however a number of additional points to bear in mind including multi-entry visa to Vietnam remain unchanged; a visa approval letter is required and visa fee upon arrival is still $65 per passenger for stays up to 30 days and $90 per passenger for stays up to 90 days.

Lufthansa introduced new Business Class Service

Lufthansa is introducing from 1st September 2015 its new ‘Business Class Signature Service’ on long-range international flights. The programme will see a higher crew-to-passenger ratio of one flight attendant for every eight passengers in the business class cabin and is based around the concept of individualized restaurant service. Meals will be plated in the galley and individually delivered to each passenger as one experiences in a restaurant.

British Airways back serving Malaysia

On Wednesday 27th May 2015 British Airways resumed its direct daily London to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) flight after a 14 year absence. The flights depart London Heathrow (LHR) at 20.15 arriving KUL 16.00 next day. The return flight departs KUL at 23.05 arriving LHR 05.25 next day.

British Airways launches On Business for SME’s

British Airways is launching a new loyalty programme for Small Medium Sized companies from 27th May 2015 entitled On Business which will offer members more opportunities to earn and spend points across the British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia network.  The new programme still offers member only discounts with members able to choose to receive points based on the amount they spend or choose a discount on selected flights.  New members receive a welcome bonus of triple On Business points on the first six eligible flights within the first 12 months of membership.

ANA offer new menus

All Nippon Airways have teamed up with Hilton Worldwide to offer new menus both in their lounges and on some flights.  Running from 1st June to 31st August 2015 it will provide special Hawaiian-themed menus at its Haneda and Narita lounges as well as onboard its Tokyo Honolulu flights.

British Airways launching new routes to Reykjavik and Salzburg

From this winter British Airways is launching two new routes from London Heathrow to Reykjavik and Salzburg.  The Reykjavik flight will operate three times per week from 25th October 2015 and twice a week from Heathrow to Salzburg from December 2015. BA already offers a service to Salzburg from London Gatwick.

Delta Air Lines launching daily nonstops to JFK from Manchester

Delta Air Lines is starting a daily nonstop service between Manchester and New York’s John F. Kennedy from 22 May 2015.  Other product initiatives being rolled out across Delta’s international fleet include the expansion of Wi-Fi service by the end of 2015.

Air Passenger Duty Reformed

Air Passenger Duty has been partially reformed in the UK from 1 May 2015 with children under 12 no longer having to pay Air Passenger Duty.  And those under 16 will be exempt from March 2016.  In addition the two most expensive bands have been adjusted downwards from 1 April 2015. Those travelling over 4,000 miles and 6,000 miles will pay £14 and £26 less respectively.

British Airways offers ‘enhanced’ meal to economy passengers

British Airways is offering its economy class passengers the option to purchase an alternative and more superior meal.

Available on select destinations from May 2015 the airline is offering five choices – Taste of Britain, Gourmet Dining, Healthy Choice, Great British Breakfast and Vegetarian Kitchen with prices ranging from £15 to £18.

Those wishing to purchase this alternative meal will have the opportunity to browse and then pre-order their choice between 30 days and 24 hours prior to their flight departure.

The new meals will be available on BA services from London Heathrow to Seattle, Miami, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Mexico City, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver and Atlanta

SilverKris is the name of the new Singapore Airlines lounge at Terminal 2 Heathrow. Designed by ONG & ONG its concept is ‘home away from home’. British Airways and its A380 services update to the USA

British Airways has announced a number of A380 service updates including it plans to extend its A380 service between London Heathrow and San Francisco into the winter season.  Having just launched a new five-times a week A380 operation to San Francisco, from 25 October 2015, it will fly daily with the A380 operating on four of these weekly services and a B747-400 on the other three days.  There will be an additional second daily service operated by a B747-400 aircraft.

And its double-daily Miami operation will also fly a daily A380 service from next winter (from 25 October 2015) with the other daily flight using a B747-400.

Norwegian Air daily to New York from London Gatwick

Norwegian Air the third largest low-cost carrier in Europe will now start a daily flight from London Gatwick to New York’s JFK from 25 October 2015 rather than 23 February 2016.  It currently offers six-times a week in the summer and four-times a week in the winter using a B787 Dreamliner aircraft.

British Airways is expanding its luggage concierge service at London City airport to all its domestic flights. The service allows passengers arriving at LCY to have their luggage from the baggage reclaim area delivered to an address within the M25. AirPortr is the supplier of this service with costs starting from £15.

Singapore Airlines to launch premium economy class

Singapore Airlines is launching its premium economy class from August 2015 with Singapore to Sydney being the first route to get this new service. It is planned London will receive the new cabin class from 28 August with passengers travelling from Manchester enjoying the service from 22 September. Premium economy class will offer more space and comfort with a 38 inch seat pitch and wider seat between 18.5 and 19.5 inches and 13.3 inch HD monitor, the largest in its class.

JAL to introduce new aircraft & cabin products in 2015

Japan Airlines is to roll out its new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners from the summer which will offer a new Sky Suite cabin including fully flat beds in business class, a new premium economy and wider economy seats. The total number of seats offered on this larger aircraft will be just 195 making it amongst the most spacious twin-aisle aircraft in the sky. This aircraft will make its debut on the Tokyo Narita Jakarta route from 1st July. The airlines B787-8’s with Sky Suite cabins are being introduced on their Narita Paris and Narita Delhi routes from 29th March and Narita Helsinki from 1st June.

British Airways to switch terminal at Gatwick

British Airways is planning to move from its current home at North Terminal to the South Terminal in November 2016. The move will include a new Executive Club lounge and check in area. The advantage of the South Terminal over the North is it has direct access to the trains including the Gatwick Express.

ANA launches new in-flight system

All Nippon Airways is introducing from February 2015 a new in-flight entertainment system offering up to 351 channels which represents an increase of 40% content compared to its current system. It will provide 52 movie channels, 142 video channels and 148 audio channels with multiple languages screening programmes in a total of 13 languages.

Vietnam Airlines to fly from Heathrow

Vietnam Airlines is to switch its London flights from Gatwick to Heathrow from March. It is planning to fly to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City five times per week from 31 March 2015, with daily services coming on stream from July.

Cathay Pacific team up with Mandarin Oriental

A new partnership has been formed between Cathay Pacific and Mandarin Oriental. Chefs from the Mandarin Oriental hotels in a number of cities across the world including London, Hong Kong and Tokyo will each design a menu to be served in first class cabins on those flights from each of these cities. The new menus will be served on a monthly basis using seasonal produce.

Emirates expanding its regional UK services

Emirates, the Gulf airline is starting from 1st February a second daily A380 flight from Manchester to Dubai and from 1st August 2015 it will offer a third daily flight from Birmingham to Dubai enabling those living in the Midlands greater choice and flexibility to tap into the Emirates worldwide network.

Cathay Pacific add new UK departures

Cathay Pacific started a codesharing with Flybe from Manchester on seven UK routes (Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, Exeter, Inverness, the Isle of Man and Southampton) in December and has just added an additional five more routes offering links from UK points to Hong Kong via both Paris and Amsterdam. These five include Birmingham, Southampton (via Schiphol) and Birmingham, Manchester and Exeter (via Charles de Gaulle).
