Economy is growing
Headlines such as the economy is recovering and consumer confidence has returned are eye-catching and welcoming but should businesses feel the worst is over?According to BDO firms are often more at risk of failure at the beginning of a recovery, struggling to cope with demand for their services and products when demand increases. So how can companies respond, what should they be doing to help overcome this potential risk?A good cash flow is imperative. When economic recovery is under-way there is a risk of taking on more work than can be fulfilled with early warning signs being cash-shortage and having to look to extend overdraft facilities as companies pay out more to suppliers than receiving from customers. Companies should therefore be looking to invest in their business, ensuring they know their break-even point and profit margin on all sales generated.Be aware of late payments with companies factoring this into their plans and according to a Small Business Survey carried out by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills 55% of medium sized businesses encounter this issue. To avoid late payments invoice earlier and chase more rigorously.Communication is key both internally and with trading partners. Management information is important and helps to be an indicator of the health of the business. Ensuring good forward planning is in place is crucial because when businesses are taking off during recovery this planning can be lost; companies should always have a plan B, being proactive rather than retroactive is central and will help create a buffer when unexpected events occur.
